- Short Run
- The period during which some inputs are fixed and cannot be varied.
- Short Ton
- Common measurement for a ton in the United States. A short ton is equal to 2,000 lbs or 0.907 metric tons. See metric ton.
- Shower
- Precipitation that is intermittent, both in time, space or intensity.
- Side-Channel Reservoir
- An off-channel reservoir, used to describe cases when the reservoir is located adjacent to the stream or river that serves as the water source.
- Siderite
- Also called ironstone, that is a concretion of iron carbonate. Common in the Mazon Creek fossil beds.
- Silicification
- Process whereby silica replaces the original material of a substance. For example, silicified wood.
- Silviculture
- A branch of forestry dealing with the development and care of forests.
- Sink
- A reservoir that uptakes a chemical element or compound from another part of its cycle. For example, soil and trees tend to act as natural sinks for carbon.
- Skimming
- The diversion of water from a stream or conduit by a shallow overflow used to avoid diversion of sand, silt, or other debris carried as bottom load.
- Sleet
- A type of frozen precipitation, consisting of small transparent pellets.
