- Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6)
- A colorless gas soluble in alcohol and ether, slightly soluble in water. A very powerful greenhouse gas used primarily in electrical transmission and distribution systems and as a dielectric in electronics. The global warming potential of SF6 is 23,900. See Global Warming Potential.
- Superfund Law
- Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) .U.S. federal law enacted by Congress in 1980 for the purpose of cleaning up existing toxic sites.
- Supplemental irrigation
- Commonly, irrigation as carried on in humid areas. The term means that the irrigation water is supplementary to the natural rainfall rather than being the primary source of moisture as in the arid and semiarid West. Supplementary irrigation is used generally to prevent retardation of growth during periods of drought.
- Supplemental sources
- When irrigation water supplies are obtained from more than one source, the source furnishing the principal supply is commonly designated the primary source, and the sources furnishing the additional supplies, the supplemental sources.
- Supply Curve
- A graphic representation of the relationship between quantities supplied at each price for a given time period.
- Supply-Side Economics
- Focus on the effects of national output potential or supply through reduction of taxes and government regulation for businesses designed to increase productivity and economic growth.
- Surface mining
- Removal of soil, sub-soil, and other strata and then extracting a mineral deposit found fairly close to the earth's surface. See strip mining.
- Surface runoff
- That portion of runoff which travels over the ground surface and through channels to reach the basin outlet. Surface runoff is composed of overland flow and streamflow.
- Surface water
- An open body of water, such as a stream, lake, reservoir, or wetland.
- Surplus
- A term used when the quantity of a good supplied exceeds the quantity demanded at the existing price.
