- Occluded Front
- A complex frontal system that occurs when a cold front overtakes a warm front. Also known as an occlusion.
- Oceanic crust
- The Earth's crust which is formed at mid-oceanic ridges, typically 5 to 10 kilometers thick with a density of 3.0 grams per centimeter cubed.
- Oceanic trench
- Deep steep-sided depression in the ocean floor caused by the subduction of oceanic crust beneath either other oceanic crust or continental crust.
- Off-Channel Reservoir
- An open body of water located apart from a water source, typically a stream or river, and into which water is diverted from that source and stored for later use.
- Off-farm (non-farm) income
- That portion of farm household income obtained off the farm, including nonfarm wages and salaries, pensions, and interest income earned by farm families. On average for all farms in the United States, off-farm income accounts for about 90% of farm operator household income.
- Offsetting compliance
- A requirement that a farmer owning multiple farms who wishes to participate in a crop program must comply with the program’s provisions on all farms under the farmer’s ownership in order to be eligible for program benefits. This provision does not apply to production flexibility contracts enacted under the FAIR Act of 1996.
- Offshore breeze
- A wind that blows from the land towards a body of water. Also known as a land breeze.
- Offshore forecast
- A marine weather forecast for the waters between 60 and 250 miles off the coast.
- Offstream use
- Water withdrawn or diverted from surface waters for public-water supply, industry, irrigation, livestock, thermoelectric-power generation, and other uses. Sometimes called off-channel use or withdrawal use. Some forms of thermoelectric-power use return water to the source (see Return flow)
- Oil
