- No-till farming
- A method of planting crops that involves no seed bed preparation other than opening the soil to place individual seeds in holes or small slits; usually no cultivation during crop production; chemical weed control is normally used. May also be referred to as slot tillage or zero cultivation. See, for comparison, conservation tillage and minimum tillage.
- NOAA
- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. A branch of the US Department of Commerce, NOAA is the parent organization of the National Weather Service.
- NOAA WEATHER RADIO (NWR)
- Continuous, 24 hour a day VHF broadcasts of weather observations and forecasts directly from National Weather Service offices. A special tone allows certain receivers to alarm when watches or warnings are issued
- NOAA WEATHER WIRE (NWWS)
- Mass dissemination via satellite of National Weather Service products to the media and public.
- Nominal GNP
- GNP measured in current prices (see Real GNP).
- Nominal Interest Rate
- The cost inflicted by inflation eroding the value of stored dollars plus the forgone real interest rate; the opportunity cost of holding money.
- Non-community water system
- “A public water system which is not a community water system, and has at least 15 service connections used by nonresidents, or regularly serves 25 or more nonresident individuals daily for at least 60 days per year.” (415 ILCS 55/9a4) Non-community water systems are regulated by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). An example of a non-community water system is a well that serves a restaurant or public park.
- Non-consumptive use
- Water use that incurs no consumptive loss, e.g., water uses for instream maintenance of aquatic habitat.
- Non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs)
- Organic compounds, other than methane, that participate in atmospheric photochemical reactions.
- Non-point source
- Large land area such as crop fields and urban areas that discharge pollutant into surface and underground water over a large area. See point source.
