- Methanotrophic
- Having the biological capacity to oxidize methane to CO2 and water by metabolism under aerobic conditions. See aerobic.
- Methyl bromide (CH3Br)
- An effective pesticide; used to fumigate soil and many agricultural products. Because it contains bromine, it depletes stratospheric ozone when released to the atmosphere. See ozone depleting substance.
- Metric Ton
- Common international measurement for the quantity of greenhouse gas emissions. A metric ton is equal to 2205 lbs or 1.1 short tons. See short ton.
- Microburst
- A strong localized downdraft from a thunderstorm with peak gusts lasting 2 to 5 minutes.
- Microeconomics
- The study of the individual parts of the economy, the household and the firm, how prices are determined and how prices determine the production, distribution and use of goods and services.
- Mid-oceanic ridges
- Elongated rises on the ocean floor where basalt periodically erupts, forming new oceanic crust; similar to continental rift zones.
- Millibar
- A unit of atmospheric pressure. 1 mb = 100 Pa (pascal). Normal surface pressure is approximately 1013 millibars.
- Mineral
- Any naturally occurring inorganic substance found in the earth's crust as a crystalline solid.
- Minimum Instream Flow
- The minimum flow a stream should contain for instream uses such as for critical ecological habitats and recreation. May refer either to specific instream water needs as determined by scientific studies or a protected flow level set by regulation
- Minimum tillage
- The minimum soil manipulation necessary for crop production. Conservation tillage, reduced tillage, and no-till farming are related terms.
