- Ice core
- A cylindrical section of ice removed from a glacier or an ice sheet in order to study climate patterns of the past. By performing chemical analyses on the air trapped in the ice, scientists can estimate the percentage of carbon dioxide and other trace gases in the atmosphere at that time.
- Igneous rock
- Any rock solidified from molten or partly molten material.
- Impact(s)
- An effect requiring the specification of underlying conditions and assumptions. For example, the operation of a well for the purpose of withdrawing groundwater, by the laws of physics, must affect water levels within the aquifer being pumped and, therefore, will affect water levels in the vicinity of the pumped well. The degree of impact is dependent upon a number of physical and hydraulic factors. Rather than define a particular impact as “adverse”, the ISWS elects to state what the impacts are for explicitly stated conditions and/or assumptions.
- Impounding Reservoir
- An open body of water created by a dam or other barrier that obstructs the flow of water in a stream, and in which runoff from that stream typically provides the primary source of water entering the reservoir. Also called in-channel or on-channel reservoir.
- In-Channel or On-Channel Reservoir
- See impounding reservoir
- Indexation
- Modifying contracts so that their dollar terms adjust to the inflation rate as measured in an index, such as the consumer price index.
- INDIAN SUMMER
- An unseasonably warm period near the middle of autumn, usually following a substantial period of cool weather.
- Induced Recharge
- The process by which water enters the ground from a surface water source as a result of withdrawal of groundwater adjacent to the source. Wells, infiltration galleries, and collector wells located directly adjacent to and fed largely by surface water cause surface water to move into the groundwater system.
- Industrial sector
- Construction, manufacturing, agricultural and mining establishments.
- Industrial water use
- Water used for industrial purposes such as fabrication, processing, washing, and cooling, and includes such industries as steel, chemical and allied products, paper and allied products, mining, and petroleum refining as classified by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) or North American Industrial Classification (NAIC) codes.
