Fossil fuel
A general term for buried combustible geologic deposits of organic materials, formed from decayed plants and animals that have been converted to crude oil, coal, natural gas, or heavy oils by exposure to heat and pressure in the earth's crust over hundreds of millions of years. See coal, petroleum, crude oil, natural gas.
Fossil fuel combustion
Burning of coal, oil (including gasoline), or natural gas. This burning, usually to generate energy, releases carbon dioxide, as well as combustion by products that can include unburned hydrocarbons, methane, and carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide, methane, and many of the unburned hydrocarbons slowly oxidize into carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Common sources of fossil fuel combustion include cars and electric utilities.
Frazil (frazil ice)
A French-Canadian term for fine spicular ice, derived from the French for cinders which this variety of ice most resembles. When formed in salt water, it is known as lolly ice. It is composed of fine particles which, when first formed, are colloidal and not seen in the water in which they are floating.
Free Good
A good which is abundant and costless.
Free Rider
One who receives something without paying.
Free-Rider Problem
Problem that occurs when someone thinks he may be able to enjoy something without paying for it, and fails to contribute ever a portion of the cost.
Freezing level
The altitude in the atmosphere where the temperature drops to 32F.
Freezing rain
Rain which falls as liquid then freezes upon impact, resulting in a coating of ice on exposed objects.

Frictional Unemployment
Unemployment due to workers leaving old jobs and seeking new ones.
