- Coliform index
- A rating of the purity of water based on a count of fecal coliform bacteria. The presence of fecal coliform bacteria, which are harmless bacteria that live in the intestines of humans and other vertebrate animals, indicates contamination by human or animal feces, and hence the potential presence of disease pathogens.
- Combustion
- Chemical oxidation accompanied by the generation of light and heat.
- Commercial sector
- An area consisting of non-housing units such as non-manufacturing business establishments (e.g., wholesale and retail businesses), health and educational institutions, and government offices.
- Commercial water use
- Water used for motels, hotels, restaurants, office buildings, other commercial facilities, fish hatcheries, and civilian and military institutions as classified by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) or North American Industrial Classification codes.
- Commodity programs
- This term is usually meant to include the commodity price and income support programs administered by the Farm Service Agency and financed by the Commodity Credit Corporation. The commodities now receiving support are: (1) those included in the production flexibility contract payments program, specifically wheat, feed grains, cotton, and rice; (2) those eligible for nonrecourse marketing assistance loans, soybeans and minor oilseeds; (3) those under marketing quota limits, peanuts and tobacco; (4) sugar and milk. A broader term that includes these programs and others is farm programs.
- Common Property Resources
- Resources for which there are no clearly defined property rights; property owned in common by a society.
- Community Right-to-Know
- Public accessibility to information about toxic pollution.
- Community water system
- “A public water system which serves at least 15 service connections used by residents or regularly serves at least 25 residents for at least 60 days per year.” (415 ILCS 55/9a1) Community water systems are regulated by the Illinois EPA. An example of a community water system is one that serves a municipality.
- Compact Fluorescent
- Flourescent light bulbs small enough to fit into standard light sockets, which are much more energy-efficient than standard incandescent bulbs.
- Comparative Advantage
- The ability of a producer to produce a good at a lower marginal cost than other producers; marginal cost in the sacrifice of some other good compared to the amount of a good obtained. A country has an comparative advantage over another in one good as opposed to another good if its relative efficiency in the production of the first good is higher than the other country's.
