What does this data set describe?
This shape file shows the location of dams in the Fox River and contains information associated with the dams. Latitude and longitude information for the dams was initially gathered from websites; 1) Dams and obstructions in the Chicago area, http://pages.ripco.net/~jwn/dam.html, accessed on 07/21/2003. 2) Mapquest, http://www.mapquest.com/maps, accessed on 07/21/2003. The locations of dams were verified and established using a script (Lon/Lat Readout in Projection ArcMap written by Trent Hare - USGS, http://arcscripts.esri.com/details.asp?dbid=12841, accessed on 07/23) and the digital ortho quarter quadrangles, 1:13k scales. The rests of attribute information were gathered from "Victor J. Santucci, Jr. and Stephen R. Gephard. April 2003. Fox River Fish Passage Feasibility Study - Final Report to Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation. P.O. Box 9. Dundee, Illinois 60118". See "Attributes" for the field definitions in this shape file.

What coordinate system is used to represent geographic features?
The map projection used is Lambert Conformal Conic.
Projection parameters:Standard parallel: 33.000000Standard parallel: 45.000000Longitude of central meridian: -89.500000Latitude of projection origin: 33.000000False easting: 2999994.000000False northing: 0.000000
Planar coordinates are encoded using coordinate pair.Abscissae (x-coordinates) are specified to the nearest 0.000512.Ordinates (y-coordinates) are specified to the nearest 0.000512.Planar coordinates are specified in survey feet.
The horizontal datum used is D_Clarke_1866.The ellipsoid used is Clarke 1866.The semi-major axis of the ellipsoid used is 6378206.400000.The flattening of the ellipsoid used is 1/294.978698.
