- EPA has selected the City of Freeport for a brownfields assessment grant. Grant funds will be used to conduct assessment activities at sites within the Rawleigh Complex Redevelopment Corridor, which has had many industrial and manufacturing uses because of its proximity to rail lines. Grant funds also will be used to conduct redevelopment planning and community outreach activities.

- EPA has selected Stephenson County for two brownfields assessment grants. Hazardous substances grant funds will be used for site inventory and prioritization, Phase I and II site assessments, and site remediation planning. Funds also will be used for community outreach and health and safety planning. Petroleum funds will be used to perform the same tasks at sites with potential petroleum contamination. The county has identified three target areas for this work: Lancaster Township, rural Lena, and the Stephenson County Economic Development Project Area.

- EPA has selected Stephenson County for two brownfields assessment grants. Community-wide grant funds will be used to prioritize brownfields, and conduct three to five Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments for hazardous substances and petroleum contamination. Grant funds also will be used to conduct cleanup planning and support community outreach activities.
